We like basic and rustic - this was dirty and neglected

We tend to gravitate more to a basic and rustic feel in our travels rather than luxury and opulence so I was not put off when I heard that the housing here was older and not fancy. However, where I would tend to describe many of the places at which we have stayed before as simple and rustic but homey, this place would better be described as stark, rundown, and uncared for. There was a surprising amount of food remaining from the prior guests....it was scattered about the partially or non-vacuumed floor and caked on the dishes, there was old coffee in the coffee maker, someone's food had exploded in the microwave and nobody bothered to clean it. There were numerous items missing from the supposedly stocked kitchenette. We were unable to proceed with our preparations the first day so we called to inquire about the items and were assured they'd be right over. Nobody ever came. Hours later I went over to the office and they eventually sent someone with about half of what we had asked for. This phenomenon was consistent enough and frustrating enough that we eventually just stopped asking for the myriad of missing things as we came across them and did without. It was common that housekeeping would come and forget to replace the toilet paper that had run out or to empty the overflowing trash. When we would call to ask them not to come because my wife and child were sleeping in, they would come anyway and wake everyone up. When we arrived, the fire escape was not accessible from our room. When we asked about it, we were told that there probably wouldn't be a fire. This was less than reassuring. There were so many issues every day that we just started laughing about it as a new thing would pop up and be met with a non-response or reluctant response. I truly have never experienced anything like it. It became so absurd, that I began to wonder if, perhaps, we were on one of those hidden camera reality shows and the whole thing would end as a joke. It didn't..
